JOB TITLE: Roll Off Driver

LOCATION: Santa Barbara

FLSA EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

DIRECT REPORTS: None

POSITION Summary:

Responsible for the delivery and pickup of roll-off containers while safely operating a roll-off truck to service customers with a sense of urgency, safely and efficiently. Operates with no preset route schedule or time frame.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following :

  • Transports containers from 11 yards to 40 yards to various sites as required.
  • Perform daily pre-and post-trip inspections. Complete and submit vehicle condition reports at the end of the shift.
  • Maneuver a truck into and out of minimum clearance spaces, using mirrors to back up distances of approximately 120 feet.
  • Safely and efficiently operates a hydraulic roll-off truck with hoist and lift equipment.
  • Secure containers by attaching a hook to the container; uses control levers to pull the container up on the bed of the truck, uses auto tarp system and/or hand tarp, and secures straps to individual containers.
  • Ensure Health and Safety is the number one priority by complying with all safe work practices, policies, and processes, and acting safely at all times.
  • Determines if containers have recyclable material or if they can be transported directly to the landfill.
  • Maintains communication with Dispatch to report customer requests, accessibility issues, and potential safety hazards.
  • Utilize Dossier fleet management software to record meter readings and report all vehicle and/or equipment problems by submitting a work pending request.
  • Courteously interact with customers and/or the general public along the route to answer questions or respond to requests.
  • Notify the supervisor of any issues requiring management action.
  • Report incidents immediately to the Department Supervisor.
  • Scan the customer site before and after dumping.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork for picking up loads.
  • Maintains a clean truck.
  • Attend weekly mandatory safety meetings.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of commercial driving experience.
  • Ability to safely operate roll-off equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and clients.
  • Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with air-brake endorsement.
  • Acceptable driver record required.
  • Basic computer competencies.
  • Attention: Stay focused and concentrated on safety.
  • Ability to analyze, problem solve, and think critically while out in the field.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or the equivalent; one year of commercial driving experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Commercial license Class A or B.

Current medical certificate.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and write English, interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. They should also be able to speak English effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute ratios and percents and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places and the risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Required to put on protective outfits, like gloves, safety footwear, and a hard hat.
