Dimension and Description

Primary Purpose: To provide professional security oversight of the hospital and grounds by protecting persons and property in accordance with state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards while promoting the Cass Regional mission statement.

Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities: Formally responsible for making recommendations regarding policies associated with the job's purpose and essential responsibilities.

Decision Making: The ability to confidently assess all available information, both known or reasonably available, in order to identify risks when dealing with combative patients; ability to know how and when to confront family members who are being hostile or argumentative with staff.

Formal Supervisory Responsibility: No formal supervisory responsibility.

Required Knowledge: Must be able to obtain a private officer commission in the City of Harrisonville, which includes shooting a qualifying score from a certified firearms instructor.

Required Skills and Ability: The ability to communicate in a professional manner both verbally and in writing; be proficient with computer and surveillance programs; be able to work well with individuals under stressful conditions; understand fire safety principles and the ability to direct others during an emergency in a professional manner.

Unusual Working Conditions: Must be able to traverse all types of terrain in all types of weather and will assist in the restraint and control of combative patients or suspects. Due to the nature of the position (responding to various situations) there is a risk of "potential exposure to hazardous drugs and chemicals."

Education and Certification/Registration required for the Position: High school diploma or equivalent.

Age Specific Competencies: Provides care for birth to pediatric (birth-2 yrs.), pediatric/child patients between (2 years-12 years); adolescent patients between 12 to 18 years of age; adult patients between 18 to 64 years; and geriatric patients 65 years and older.

Qualifications

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

Responsible for protection of Cass Regional Employees, Patients, visitors, and property. (75% of the time)

  • Performs routine building and grounds physical patrol every two hours.
  • Provides daily computer-generated shift activity log and presents to management by the end of shift.
  • Locks and unlocks defined perimeter exits at beginning and ending of each shift.
  • Provides quarterly fire drills as defined by Infection Control and Employee Health and Safety Specialist.
  • Reports safety hazards daily.
  • Initiates maintenance work orders, as needed.
  • Provides support to staff by providing patient assistance, as requested.

Investigate, Document and Follow Up on Incidents. (10% of the time)

  • Completes and documents interviews and initial investigation of incidents at the time of each occurrence.
  • Reports each incident daily to Cass Regional management, Risk Manager and local authorities, as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional relationship with Harrisonville Police Department and Harrisonville Fire Department and community. (5% of the time)
  • Performs radio test each month with Harrisonville Fire and Police Departments.
  • Relieves officers on standby, as needed.
  • Give tours of facility to new police officers and fire fighters.

Maintain Equipment. (5% of the time)

  • Clean handgun quarterly.
  • Oil and maintain hand cuffs quarterly.

Assist with Additional Hospital Activities. (5% of the time)

  • Patrol activity area, as needed.
  • Assist with directions, as needed.
  • Control disorderly conduct, as needed.
